"Convicted Killer “Party Monster” Michael Alig Released From Prison

Michael Alig, the most notorious New York nightclub promoter of the 1990s, was released from jail today after serving over 17 years for manslaughter.

Michael Alig, co-founder of the Club Kids, who gained notoriety in the New York club scene in the early 90s — then became infamous after he killed and dismembered his friend and drug dealer — has been released from prison after serving 17 years in jail.

Alig, 47, who admitted that he smothered 25-year-old Andre “Angel” Melendez, then chopped up his body and threw it into the Hudson River, plead guilty to manslaughter in 1997 and was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison. He has been up for parole since 2007, but was denied his conditional release until today.

Alig’s accomplice, Robert Riggs, also plead guilty and served time for the killing of Melendez. He was released in 2010.

Alig was portrayed by Macaulay Culkin in the 2003 film Party Monster. Seth Green played his long-time best friend and rival James St. James.

During his stint in prison Alig maintained his cult hero status through a blog and Twitter account — he dictated tweets for @Alig_Aligula to a friend over the prison phone. According to his Twitter bio, he also wrote a book in prison, titled Aligula."

Boys are cuter in the 21st century. And dicks are bigger. These are facts. If you don’t believe me, spend an hour on Tumblr. Another odd thing: EVERYBODY has killer style now. Kids in Peoria are as fabulous as the kids in Williamsburg. It’s all rather dizzying, and kind of depressing. When everybody is fabulous, nobody is.

OMG. Burger King changed their french fries and the world has never been the same.

Cabs take credit cards now.

We don’t use the “t” word anymore. (It’s “trans” now) And don’t even joke about it. The PC police will GET YOU. Also: “cisgender” is a thing now. Sprinkle it liberally into conversations to give yourself a bit of gravitas.

Viral videos, blogs, GIFs, memes – there’s a whole world waiting for you online. But the internet is a scary place. Things get weird fast. I suggest dipping your feet in slowly. Gently. Here are a few fun, soothing videos to get you going: David After Dentist, The Prancercize Lady, Charlie Bit Me, Sweet Brown, Two Girls One Cup…

Technology develops at light speed now, you don’t want to get left behind. You NEED a smart phone, a computer, a DVR, and a tablet. There are no two ways around this. And be sure to keep up on all the latest upgrades and gadgets. You don’t want to be like me. I still have an iphone 4. Its calculator is an abacus. My Grindr only has Pilgrims in my area who want to hook up. It’s OLD.

Things we don’t need any more: Phone books, dictionaries, maps, and encyclopedias. They’re all in your phone. IT’S CRAZY.
Things it takes awhile to get used to not needing anymore: Photographs, books, and newspapers. You’ll fight this, but eventually you’ll succumb. It’s a paperless world now. Adapt or die.

You aren’t going to believe this one: Clubs play top 40 now. Rihanna, Britney, Katy Perry. That’s it. It’s very sad. The scene has changed. Clubs aren’t the subversive pleasure palaces of yore. Now, it’s just a thousand shrieking girls taking selfies and dancing to “Wake Me Up” by Aviccii.

95% of your time in any given club will be spent having your picture taken. Seriously. It’s. All. You. Do. Picture after picture after picture.

Until you want to snap someones head off.

Speaking of clubs: You’ve become a bit of a legend since you went in (YOU’RE WELCOME) and you WILL stop the room the first few times you go out. It’s an odd sensation, but even odder is when it doesn’t happen. See, you’re old now, and although many of this generation were raised on Party Monster , sometimes you’ll find yourself in a room where everybody is completely CLUELESS. They’ve never seen the Geraldos or Phil Donahues or Jenny Joneses. They’ve never heard of Angel. They don’t know or care who Julie Jewels was. They don’t even know who Andy Warhol was. A 21-year-old at WOW had never heard of Moby. MOBY. It’s weird. The generation that has the greatest access to knowledge in the history of mankind is the one that cares the least about it. So there will be places where you go where NOBODY WILL RECOGNIZE YOU and NOBODY WILL CARE. And because you are no longer a cute little twink, 20-somethings will LOOK RIGHT THROUGH YOU. Or worse: SNEER at the old man. Joy Behar once said that after 35 nobody looks at you on the beach anymore, no matter how good you look. It’s true. And it’s true everywhere. My point: Enjoy the times people recognize you, because not being recognized when your old SUUUUUUUCKS.

Haterz gonna hate, of course, but the worst of the worst are YouTube commenters and Redditors. You have been warned.

Stay away from Beliebers, Little Monsters, and Directioners. They make holocaust deniers seem well-reasoned. And they will cut a bitch if you cross them.

Breaking Bad. You need to Netflix that shit NOW. (Also on your to-do list: Get Netflix.)

Movies. I was thinking of starting a #MoviesMichaelNeedstoSee on Twitter, because I can’t possibly list 18 years worth of important, life-altering movies off the top of my head, but here’s where to start: Donnie Darko, Bully, Gummo, Mysterious Skin, Blair Witch, Election, Jaw Breaker, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Apt Pupil, Hedwig, Spring Breakers, Funny Games, Happiness, The Rules of Attraction, American Psycho, Boys Don’t Cry, Velvet Goldmine, Fight Club, Bad Santa, Scream, The Ice Storm, Boogie Nights, Igby Goes Down, Rushmore, Die Mommy Die, Last Days of Disco, AI, Lost Highway, 28 Days Later, Pan’s Labyrinth, District 9, Capturing the Friedmans… and on.

Funny side note: Drug dealers almost always have Party Monster on. Or Kill Bill Volume 2. Literally WITHOUT FAIL. Every drug dealer’s apartment you will ever go to (and I’m not advising you to got to any… but) there they are. There YOU are. On a loop.

Drugs. Omg, there are so many new drugs that I’m advising you not to do. You can’t, of course, because you’re on A SPIRITUALLY ENLIGHTENED PATH now – planting trees in Angel’s name and building homes for orphans and whatnot. The last thing we need is for you to chew off some hobo’s face while high on bath salts. But there’s a WORLD of new synthetic drugs you should AT LEAST be aware of: K2, Salvio, Meow Meow…
OH. There is ONE drug that you really OUGHT TO TRY. You’ll just love it, I know it.
NO SIDE EFFECTS. And NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW you’ve done it.
It’s called krocodil.
Really, Michael, I’m just going to get a tiny, little gram of krokodil as a getting out present…. Thank me later.

"'Party Monster' Michael Alig Leaves Jail After Sentence for Killing Drug Dealer

New York City Club Kid Michael Alig, who spent 17 years in jail for killing a drug dealer over a debt and reportedly injecting him with Drano, was freed from jail on conditional release Monday morning.

Despite incarceration for the grisly killing of Andre “Angel” Melendez, Alig has maintained a dedicated fan base since his days as a nightlife king in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when he led the Club Kids, a group of partygoers made so infamous by their larger-than-life costumes and hard drug consumption that they were profiled on daytime talk shows such as Geraldo.

Alig, who along with co-killer Robert “Freeze” Riggs pleaded guilty to manslaughter for Melendez’s 1996 killing, cemented his cult status with several popular portrayals of his crime. James St. James, who was also a leader of the Club Kids, wrote a widely read book about the killing, Disco Bloodbath. The book was adapted into a 2003 movie, Party Monster, in which Macaulay Culkin played Alig. This casting effectively exposed a younger, Home Alone-watching generation of kids to Club Kid culture and its glitzy, albeit drugged-up, glamour.

Upon becoming a free man Monday morning, Alig has been quite busy, including an early run-in with authorities that almost landed him back in jail.

“Just narrowly escaped being re arrested for having my release filmed but we're ok and in our way to nyc! #narrowescape” Alig tweeted at 8:05 a.m."

"Michael Alig’s First Week of Freedom, after 17 Years of Prison

“This hug is for your mother,” I whispered embracing Michael Alig, the former “king of the club kids” after he emerged from a prison truck at the entrance to Mid-State Correctional Facility, in Marcy, New York, last Monday. “I can’t believe this is really happening!” He was finally being released, after serving 17 years for manslaughter, for the death and dismemberment of Andre “Angel” Melendez, after a drug-fueled argument one night in 1996. Alig, now 48, smiled and blinked in the sunlight.

Suddenly: “Michael!” Astro and Scotto, two ex–club kids, nudged me aside, while a third guy videotaped and snapped photos of the confused-looking Alig.

“Hi!” exclaimed Astro. “Oh, and I see you already have a boyfriend! Did you [sleep with] him in prison?” Alig looked mortified. Standing behind him was a cute, straight 26-year-old man who was also being freed. He and Michael had bonded that morning, after the prisoner said, “I think someone famous is getting out today—they said there’s a van full of press outside.” Michael ended up inviting him along for our four-hour journey back to Manhattan. The guy’s name was Mike, “but his Facebook name is Rico Suave!” Alig told me, delighted.

As we walked to our van, Alig whispered: “Why are they here?” He claimed hadn’t heard from either Astro or Scotto in more than a decade. I just shook my head.

Alig’s prison release was originally going to be somewhat low-key: I’d pick him up in a Zipcar, we’d get dinner in NYC with some of his loved ones, and then head up to his old roommate Ernie Glam’s apartment in the Bronx, where Alig would be moving. But then the Hollywood production company World of Wonder apparently wanted to fly in James St. James, writer of the book Disco Bloodbath, basis for the movie Party Monster (both about Alig) from L.A., for a filmed, multi-day reunion; Ramon Fernandez, director of the upcoming documentary Glory Daze: The Life and Times of Michael Alig, asked if he could shoot Michael for his first two weeks of freedom; The New York Times requested to ride along with everyone for his release. The production company rented a 15-person van for the occasion.

Alig, Rico, and I climbed in. Outside we could see Fernandez being questioned by a pissed-off prison official: no big cameras were allowed to film on prison property.

“How do you feel being free, Michael?” I asked, excitedly. We’d become close over the past decade, after a magazine asked me to interview him, for an article coinciding with the release of Party Monster. I’d thought Alig was an intriguing, complex person, and he seemed to have genuine remorse about killing Angel. After two interviews I’d agreed to help him with his autobiography, Aligula.

“I feel like I’m about to be re-arrested!” Alig said.

A prison truck had pulled in front of our van, facing us, and a hardened corrections officer wagged her finger and yelled, “They told me not to let you leave!” A second truck parked beside us.

“They’re blocking us in!” Alig exclaimed.

“Oh man, this is crazy,” I heard behind me. I looked back at Rico, who was wearing a rosary. He smiled sweetly.

After a few stressful minutes, we were allowed to leave. “This is an iPhone,” I said, showing Alig as we raced along Interstate 90. For the past 18 months I’d been posting tweets he’d given me over the phone, so I taught him how to tweet for himself:

At a rest stop, Alig tried Starbucks for the first time: “So decadent!” Then he and I took a selfie in front of a tree with large purple blossoms. “It’s so pretty—springtime! New beginnings!” Michael gushed. “It feels like being reborn again: everything is new and unusual.” In Manhattan, St. James and his crew waited outside the restaurant Almond in the Flat Iron district. “I’m nervous he’ll think I look fat and old,” Alig told me.

“But he’s your friend,” I said. “And your skin looks great because you’ve been out of the sun for 17 years.”

The reunion went well (“He’s the one who looks fat and old!” Alig joked), and we all sat down for Alig’s first fancy dinner in almost two decades. “It’s so weird tasting spices again,” Michael said, digging into his pan-roasted arctic char.

He reminisced, until a World of Wonder employee/handler said, “No dessert—we have to get Michael to the Bronx!” His parole stipulated he had to be home by eight.

“I feel like I did when I first arrived in 1984,” Alig said, back in the van and staring out at the shimmering skyline. “Like the city is full of potential and totally unwelcoming at the same time.”
